How To Get the Most Out of Your Make-up Artist: A Guide for Brides and Their Maids
Posted by Crystal in Bridal Gowns & Accessories, Weddng Party Attire
Make-up artists, by nature, love to make people beautiful. I can attest to that first hand. When I started doing make-up I realized right away that brides and their maids were extra special people, and much more festive and fun than the average supermodel wanna-be. Make-up artists who specialize in bridal make-up are serving double-duty: they want the bride and her friends to look her absolute best on this very special day, but they also want the bride to feel great about herself. Working weddings isn’t the same as television commercials; in both cases you’re required to be diligent and professional, but when you’re a part of someone’s wedding day, you are a part of an experience that lasts a lifetime.
That said, there are ways a bride can get the most out of her make-up artist as well, to look her very best and make the experience beautiful for the both of them. If you’re reading this article, then you’ve already heard the legends of Bridezillas, seemingly sound and sweet girls who transformed into card-carrying monsters (with a bouquet of calla lilies). Clearly, extreme behavior is unacceptable. But there may be a few additional pointers you haven’t heard or simply just need to hear again in order to get the most out of the person responsible for bringing the best and most beautiful out of you.
1. Don’t Skip the Pre-show
Most reputable make-up artists will absolutely insist on a consultation, at least several weeks before the wedding. Yes, it’s true that they charge for this, but trust me when I say it’s an investment worth its weight in gold wedding bands.
How to get the most out of it? For every client I consult I offer to give her a step-by-step make-up lesson, where I describe in absolute detail exactly what she’d need to do for every day beauty. I go through make-up cases and tell them what to throw and what to keep. I make it simple and fun and always encourage my consults to make an event out of it, invite friends, and enjoy themselves.
2. Trust Us
For some odd reason, about half of the women who come to me for consultations are dead set on dark smoky eyes and pale lips. Now, believe me, this is a gorgeous look that I personally love and adore, but it’s not a look that’s perfect for every single person. Moreover, it’s not always the very best look for bridal photos and sometimes difficult to maintain if you’re not keeping your make-up artist through the end of the night.
How to get the most out of it? Before your consultation, start by ripping out looks you like from magazines; chances are great they’ll all be similar in some way. If all you want is dark, smoky eyes and pale lips and your make-up artist is resisting, then one of you might suggest trying something lighter first, and then trying a dark-eyed look later. One is easily transferable into the other. Of course, make sure you bring a camera so that you can see how it looks in pictures. If you insist on a look and your make-up person is obstinately opposed, remember that you are always the client, and can easily take your business somewhere else. But give your professional make-up artist an ear, she may have something truly valuable to say!
3. Dedication and Commitment
You’re a bride, and that means you’re allowed to change your mind. However, once you and your make-up artist have decided on a look, try not to be surprised when that’s exactly what you get on your wedding day. This hasn’t happened to be personally, but I’ve been told complete horror stories from make-up artists (and hair stylists) who prepared for one look only to have an emotional bride, moments before show time, demand another.
How to get the most out of it? You’re not doing anyone a favor by changing the flow of things, least of all yourself. There’s a time and place to let your emotions get the best of you, but right before you walk down the isle, scraping off a beautiful, well-planned full face of make-up, is not one of them. Trust the people who care about you for their opinion. If they say you look beautiful, there are excellent chances that you really do.
4. A Little Landscaping
Make-up artists have been known to work miracles, but trust me, you don’t want to test their almighty powers the day of your wedding. That’s why brides need to take the responsibility for skincare and grooming several weeks before their wedding. The average standard is to get a facial no less than two months before the big day, in the event there’s an allergy issue. Many brides have unusually bad skin due to the inevitable stress; do not put this off, go and see a good dermatologist. A make-up artist is not a magician, probably extremely close, but she can’t make all of your skin problems disappear.
How to get the most out of it? Perhaps the smallest of the important maintenance issues is the bride and her eyebrows. For all of my clients, I insist that they get their eyebrows shaped and tweezed by a reputable professional two days before the wedding. All make-up artists know how to tweeze brows, nearly all women have some sort of reaction to getting their brows tweezed, whether it be bright red puffing, or just general unpleasantness. A professional can take the time to make your brows groomed and shaped, so that you can maintain them yourself over the course of several months. Chances are a reputable eyebrow shaper will cost more than you think, but in then end you will be so grateful. Have you ever seen someone with bad brows? There’s nothing pretty about it.
5. Order in the (Wedding) Court
I had a job once where I was contracted to do make-up for the bride, her mother and one bridesmaid. It was a job I could easily perform myself, no questions asked, and agreed, unusually, to do it for a set fee. However, a week before the wedding her mother (officially the client) called to ask if they could add a few more people. I told her the truth, that I would be happy to add the others if and only if the primary clients, most especially the bride, were taken care of. Well, the day of the wedding rolls around and very suddenly there are nine women who’ve all been promised make-up. I made sure to stick to my guns (as well as my priorities), but in the end while everyone got the make-up they wanted, it wasn’t the best was to handle things.
How to get the most out of it? Everyone understands that a bride can’t manage everything on her wedding day, nor should she have to! But, if you sense that things could potentially spiral, maybe assign someone to “manage” your group in the event you suspect things could get out of hand. There are many ways this could happen. For example, I worked a wedding once where I was to make up the bride, her mother, her mother-in-law and her (I kid you not) nine bridesmaids. They’d only contracted one make-up person (me) and a hair stylist, so we got together and made up a strict schedule, starting at 9:00am with everyone ready for their 1:00 photo call. Well, lo and behold the girls had been out late the night before, and no one showed up until 11:30.
All I can say is, don’t be that person.
The inevitable is going to happen, no doubt about that. But in the end you want this to be an experience you remember the same way you dreamt it. It wouldn’t hurt if everyone around you had a great experience, too, so that they can help you be as happy and as beautiful as you know you can be.

Winter Wedding Wear
Posted by Crystal in Bridal Gowns & Accessories

Take a look at this AMAZING collection of Winter Wedding photos by Mike of Digital Arts Photography. Summer is by far the most popular time of year for weddings, but winter can lend itself to some absolutely gorgeous, and unforgettable weddings as well. Winter weddings can also be a wise choice for the budget bride. With less brides competing for venues and vendors, you may find that some vendors will charge less then they do in summer – at that the best deals, which are often booked way in advance in the summer, will be easier to get in the winter months. One common concern for brides who choose to have a winter wedding is warmth. most of todays most popular gowns are not exactly warm – and who wants to wear the most beautiful gown they will ever own with a parka? Wedding capes, shawls, jackets and stoles are all great options for warmth, though they can also be expensive. Here are a few affordable options that we found:
Faux Fur Wraps with Bows are a great, light option. This particular one is listed at $22.50, and there are a number of versions on eBay ranging from $15-$50 in price. Of course, these won’t be as warm as a jacket, but they will give you a little added protection from the cold, especially if your gown is a strapless one.

Another great option is a Faux Fur Short Capes like this one. They can range in size from shoulder coverage, to hip length, and can vary in price as well. This particular one was listed at $12.99, and longer versions can be anywhere from $25-$100 depending on what you are looking for.

This is my favorite look – Faux Fur Capes – but they are also the most expensive option. I did see a few on eBay around the $50-$75 range, the one I liked best (shown above) sells for $199. Of course, if you are planning outdoor photos or even an outdoor ceremony – you want a full cape for the warm.
Cheap Wedding Dresses Do Not Necessarily Mean Poor Quality

Your wedding day is undoubtedly one of the most important days of your life, but it can also be one of the most expensive. For the bride perhaps the most important item on the shopping list will be her wedding dress and with an increasing number of high quality but relatively cheap wedding dresses on the market today it is possible to have the dress of your dreams without breaking the bank.
For many people a wedding dress should be a traditional full length white gown, symbolizing the bride’s pure heart and innocence, complete with veil and train first popularized by Queen Victoria when she broke with the royal custom of marrying in silver and chose a white gown for her marriage to Prince Albert. This started a craze which has continued until today with a large number of brides choosing a white wedding dress or a dress in a variation of white such as cream, eggshell or ivory.
Today however we are seeing two major shifts taking place when it comes to weddings.
In the first place we are seeing a return to pre-Victorian days when brides married in simpler dresses of just about any color that took their fancy, except for black which was associated with mourning and red which was worn only by “ladies of the night”. This also means often dispensing with the veil, which is said to symbolize virginity, and the train which is very much a trapping of royal weddings and emulates the peacock, which was formerly seen an a royal bird.
In the second place we are also seeing a move away from the church wedding towards weddings held in a wide variety of venues, including the increasingly popular beach wedding.
As a result not only do brides now have a much wider choice of color for their wedding dress but, more importantly, dispensing with the veil and train and the need for a full length dress now means that brides can choose from a range of far more simple wedding dresses. For the cost conscious this is great as informal wedding dresses are also considerably cheaper than the full traditional white wedding outfit.
One other important point here is that the move away from the full white wedding gown also means that it is no longer necessary to purchase your dress from a specialist bridal outfitter who, not surprisingly, will charge a premium simply for the service that is provided or for the name or brand that you are buying. It’s a bit like a pair of running shoes – you can buy two virtually identical pairs of shoes and pay ten times more for one pair than for the other simply because it carries a brand name.
There has never been a better time to shop for your wedding dress and the choice available to you today in terms of color, style and supplier is vast. It’s no longer that difficult to find reasonably cheap wedding dresses and still end up looking like a million dollars in the dress of your dreams.

Bridesmaid Gowns for the Bride
Posted by Crystal in Bridal Gowns & Accessories, Weddng Party Attire
I often have brides asking me for advice on where to find bridal gowns under $250. While there are a few places, often there just isn’t that much selection. What I often tell brides is to make sure they look through the bridesmaid dress selections as well. Many bridesmaid dresses are available in styles that, if ordered in white or ivory, would look just as good if not better then the cheaper bridal gowns available.
Here are a few examples I picked out from the Bill Levkoff bridesmaid line. These are just a few of the ones I found with photos in white or ivory, but there were plenty more – and each one is priced under $250! They are stunning styles, perfect for a semi-formal, informal, garden, beach or destination wedding and very nice on the pocket book.

Styles shown here: Style #808 – $220 at The Bridal Shop, Style #550 – $220 at The Bridal Shop, Style #303 – $230 at The Bridal Shop, Style #305 – $190 at The Bridal Shop, Style #355 – $196 at The Bridal Shop, Style #966 – $184 at The Bridal Shop
SO – here is the next question that I often get asked: If I wear a white bridesmaid gown, how do I make sure that my gown stands out from the bridemaids? Well, color is of course the first key – but the other key is length. If you are wearing a full floor length bridesmaid style as a wedding gown – then choose a tea length style for your bridesmaids and your gown will look even more bridal. For example, here is a quick photoshop knockup of Bill Levkoff Style #550 with Style #267. There is no doubt which one would be the bride, and which would be the bridemaid – but both girls look stunning! That bridesmaid Style #267 is also a very affordable option for your bridesmaids at $150!

Cheap VS Tacky
Posted by Crystal in Bridal Gowns & Accessories
A lot of people hear “cheap” and think “tacky” but there is a BIG difference:
This is CHEAP:

From eBay: Chic Bridal Shoes Under $20 – very elegant and tasteful, even on a budget
This is TACKY:

Yes, yes I KNOW – they are SO COMFORTABLE. They’re also PLASTIC GARDENING SHOES!!! Seriously – if there is ever a day NOT to wear rubber shoes – it’s your wedding day. If you want comfortable, try these instead. Also all under $20!

And my personal favorite: If you are having a Vintage feel or theme to your wedding – these are delightful and fun without being tacky:) They are also affordable at $10 per pair

The Real Deal #1
Posted by Crystal in Bridal Gowns & Accessories, The Real Deal
I love eBay – and it’s a great way to find a great deal on almost anything – including a wedding gown:) The problem is, with thousands of listings, many of which are customs/replicas that show only a stolen designer picture – it’s a lot of work to surf through and find real deals. SO – I am going to do it for you:) Once a week or so, I will post some current DESIGNER original wedding gowns being offered on eBay.
Steal Of The Week:

A $6000 Reem Acra Gown style 9935 in size 10 with tons of photos of the actually gown you are bidding on – a MAJOR steal with a starting bid at $499!!! WOW!!!

Pure Silk Amy Michelson Gown – worn once. The bride who is selling it paid $3500 including alterations and is approximately a size 6-8. The starting bid is $50, but there is a reserve. Even the $1500 Buy It Now price is a steal!
More Great Deals:

Private Label by G embriodered gown taken in to 36, 26, 37 and worn once, this beautiful champagne colored gown features crystals and embriodery and has been preserved. Starting bid is $250, Buy It Now is only $399!

A clearance auction from an actual bridal salon, this Mon Cheri Bridal gown is brand new! It is an ivory, size 12, never altered or used and the auction includes pictures of the actual gown you will get, not just the designer photos! Starting bid is only $19 with no reserve!! WOW

Another WOW – this is David’s Bridal Style E8052 and has been worn once and is an unaltered size 12 in ivory. The sellers lists that the dress may need cleaning before use – but with a starting bid of only $24, still a HUGE steal!!

Another gorgeous David’s Bridal style, this gown is white, plus size 18W and was worn once for a few hours. A great deal with a start bid of only $25!

David’s Bridal St. Tropez style v8759 with a custom bustle – this gown is an ivory size 6 and a great bargain with a starting bid of $200!

Another bridal shop summer clearance – the Buy It Now Price on this Fantasy by Forever Yours gown is only $45, new, unaltered size 8!

This Christian Micheal unaltered size 12 gown comes with a matching veil, gloves, shawl and case. The retail value of the items is nearly $2000 – but the gown has a slight tear near the bottom edge that could be easily repaired. Well worth the extra effort considering the starting bid is ONLY 99 CENTS!!!!
Well, that’s my list for this week:) For more Bridal Gowns on eBay – click here.
Orchid Dress Idea
Looking for a way to bring your orchid theme into your bridal gown or your bridesmaid gowns? Take a look at this lovely gown:

The dress is a bridesmaid version of Madison from Chrys Cross Bridal – with a burgundy sash. The dress came with a large floral flower which we removed and replaced with a simple orchid hair clip that we purchased for $5 on ebay! Voila – a lovely orchid bridesmaid gown!
You can match the sash colors to the theme/flowers as well. If you are using orchids with a pink center – choose burgundy, pale pink, yellow, sage green etc. For the yellow centered flowers, try yellow, baby blue, dark blue, sage green, etc.
You can get the bridesmaid version (which has a slimmer skirt the then bridal tea length version) by special request for $199 including shipping. And of course – the bridal version for an informal or semi formal wedding would be perfect as well! Want it more formal? As them to make it floor length with a train for $399 and you now have a perfect orchid themed formal gown!

Add to that the average of $274 for a veil and another $333 for additional accessories – and you have a total of more then $2000 for bridal attire alone! For a bride on a budget, that’s a huge chunk of money just for clothes. Are there other options – of course there are! Smart shopping and searching online can help you save TONS! Here is an example:
