The (American) Bride Wore Red

CR 1 3s The (American) Bride Wore RedIncreasing numbers of American brides are thinking about doing the formerly unthinkable — getting married in a bold red gown.

Not that red is a stranger to marriage. Hardly. Red plays a major role in Chinese, Hindu, and some Muslim weddings, and was a popular choice in medieval times. But for modern Westerners? Yes — we too are starting to marry in red. At least some of us.

It’s been happening more and more in Europe over the past decade. Maybe that’s because Europe recalls long stretches of time when wedding gowns weren’t white. For eons, a woman simply wore her best dress — one she could certainly use again — although to keep luck on her side she might gravitate to certain colors and avoid others. With all the choices, it was harder to keep the good colors straight, so the folk world offered a poem with a few fortunate outcomes and many poor ones:

Married in White, you have chosen right …Married in Brown, you will live in the town …

Married in Blue, you will always be true …

Blue gowns were popular since early times, since blue represented purity and the Virgin Mary. This tradition continues in the “something blue” a bride wears today. White was less common, especially among anything other than the bluest bluebloods, because of its difficulty in coming clean in the wash.

But eventually, several big players popularized white, most notably the fashion hound Queen Victoria. Ever since — especially in a world where clothes are mass-produced and a woman can afford many dresses, even one she’ll only wear once — white’s been all the rage.

Yet even more recently, some have found this timeworn symbol of purity and affluence a little constricting. Some brides want a little less predictability and more choice. And not everyone looks good in white, as some brides point out.

While a percentage of European brides have snapped up dramatic red gowns for the past decade, Americans have been more cautious. It’s only been about the past four years that tentative pastel washes and small colored accents have made the scene here.

That’s beginning to change. A small but growing number of brides — and designers — are getting bolder. Formal, stunning, all-red gowns are making inroads into Christmas or holiday weddings, especially the cozy kind in front of a crackling hearth. You’ll see more red at Valentine weddings, rose-themed weddings, and Las Vegas weddings — not to mention second weddings where the bride’s more apt to select exactly what she feels good in, and nothing less.

Thinking of red for yourself? Maybe your forebears did too. During the American Revolution, it wasn’t uncommon for brides show their support for the rebellion by donning a red dress.

Fortunately, these days it’s not a political statement. A bride wears red because she wants to. She’s comfortable with herself and with the dress she finds most beautiful — even if that choice still raises some eyebrows in the back of the chapel.

Planning A Fourth Of July Wedding

red blue wedding flowers july 4 wedding cake wedding dress american wedding dress wedding cake

julia rose anna red wedding dressWhenever you plan a wedding theme, the first thing to do is pick a key point. For a beach wedding, this might be the color blue, or sea shells. For a 4th of July or Memorial Day wedding, red, white and blue – and flags, are the obvious choice. So, how do you plan a red, white and blue wedding that is gorgeous and affordable? Well, let’s take a look:

Start with the clothing. For the bride, a stunning red and white wedding gown, like ANNA shown here. For the groom, a white or navy blue suit with a red vest and tie. The flower girl will look beautiful in a red gown with a navy blue sash, to match the navy blue bridesmaid gowns. The groomsmen would be in navy or white tuxedos with navy vest and tie. Personally, I think white would look amazing. Tuxedos with tails and top hats would also be stunning. Finish of the look with red necklaces for the girls, and blue for the bride – and red roses for the bouquets and boutinierres.

For wedding invitations, use a navy blue cardstock, with a frosted vellum overlay printed with your information. Tie the two together with a red ribbon, and seal in an envelope with a flag sticker or a wax seal.

garterFor the ceremony, decorate the center aisle with a white aisle runner. At the edge of each pew or row – place a pew bow of white tulle decorated with red and blue ribbon, ivy and a tiny US flag. If you need to fit into a smaller budget – put them only on the first few rows were immediate family and honored guests will be sitting. If you want an archway at the alter, decorate it with white tulle, red and blue ribbon, ivy and tiny flags to match the pew bows.

There are two unique guest book ideas that come to mind. You could take a large piece of parchment and have your names, date and place written on top in old fashioned calligraphy. Distress the paper, and tie it with a ribbon for a week or so before the wedding – so it has the just unrolled look. Have guests sign – just like the fore fathers did. Of, find a flag that is large, but small enough to still hang on a wall. Have your names and dates embroidered on the center, and then have guests use fabric pens to sign on the flag. This flag can then be framed and hung later on.

Remembrance – You may want to do something to remember those who gave their lives as well. Place a small side table with three candles – red, white and blue somewere were it will be seen. Place a wreath of red, white and blue flowers in front. This could be placed by the guestbook table, or near the entrance to the sanctuary. It could also go in the reception hall near the cake table or in front of the head table if you wanted.

For reception décor, use white table clothes. Decorate the head table with tulle, ribbon, ivy and tiny flags as you did the pew bows. For the guest tables, you can use small flower arrangements of red carnations with blue and white ribbons, and a little flag in the center. Accent the centerpiece with red, white and blue confetti. Oil lanterns with an old fashion look would also make great centerpieces. If they are clear –red and blue oil make a great touch! If you are using table markers – name each table after a founding father or a state. A rose bowl with a floating candle would make a great centerpiece as well – just tie red and blue ribbon around the top.

This is the perfect wedding theme for an All American Bar-B-Que! For an informal wedding, offer a buffet of freshed grilled beef and chicken burgers, fruit salad, potato salad, coleslaw, etc. For a more formal wedding, bar-b-qued chicken with baked potatoes is perfect. A cake or dessert dish decorated with strawberries and blueberries is the perfect end to the meal. We have another article posted on red, blue and white wedding cakes for a 4th of July wedding as well -you can read it here.

And for a finishing touch – don’t forget to leave the wedding in a bang: yes I mean fireworks. Plan for a fireworks display to take place as part of your farewell as you and your new husband leave the wedding! If you are not able to have fireworks, opt for some amazing 36” sparkles for guests to use to see you off!

AFTERTHOUGHT: Eagles would also make a great addition to your decor for a July 4th wedding. Don’t think eagles are romantic? You might change your mind. Eagles are one of the few animals on earth that mate for life. When a pair of eagles meet, they will soar together as high above the clouds – male chasing female. Then, she will allow herself to fall. If the male catches her on his back – they will remain together for the rest of their lives! What a wonderful display of love, trust, and faithfulness. “When you soar, I will soar with you. When you fall, I will catch you.”

Discount Rocks

Okay – so we all love a nice rock – but it’s often a tough part of the budget. I love Bidz.com – in fact, I purchased both my wedding band and my husband’s wedding band there 2 years ago! My wedding band is a 10K white gold band. Basically, its a channel band but the three center diamonds are raised. It sold for $599 locally, and I paid $68. My husband’s tungstun band would have been $300 here, we paid $26! We went with Bidz because unlike regular auction sites – Bidz is a private site run by a jeweler and items are not listed by random members of the public.

Tips for using Bidz.com:

- know you spending limit, and make sure you read the description so you know what you are bidding for

- don’t bid right away, unless you LOVE it. They put up new stuff every few hours, so if you watch for a few days you will find something you really love

Pins and brooches are great because they allow you to add a personal unique touch to your wedding gown – making it uniquely yours. I love the look of a brooch or pin on a wedding gown – on a sash, at the waist line, etc – to create a unique focus point. You can also carry the look through-out your wedding, to pull different pieces together. For example, use a pin on your gown, a matching pin instead of a boutineirre for the groom, as an accent in your bouquet or centerpieces, or on your guestbook. If you pick an affordable pin/brooch, it can also be an affordable alternative to flowers for the men in your wedding party and even for the parents and officiant. Also a great option for brides who don’t really like flowers.

Can You Really Save Money Online?

3 12a1 Can You Really Save Money Online? Many brides are leary about shopping online. You’ve probably heard of at least one person who’s gotten a GREAT deal online, but you’ve also heard of many how have gotten taken for a ride. SO can you really save money online? Why are online prices so much cheaper? And how can you avoid being scammed?

First of all YES YES YES!!!!!!!! If you are working on budget, you can save a great deal of money online!

WHY? How come online prices are so much cheaper? The main reason is the lack of overhead an online business incurs! There is no need to pay for a store front and merchandising, less need to staff members and sales teams, etc. Many of these expences are coverd by the price of your wedding gown, and so when these expenses are not there, the price can drop! That is why online retailers can afford to offer prices 50% or more below the bridal salon price!

And the biggest question: How can you avoid being scammed! Here are some simple tips to help you safe gaurd your self and your money!

1. Pay with an insured source: most major credit cards have purhcase insurance, and many major payment processors, like PayPal, offer buyers insurance on purchases as well. This is much safer then money orders, cash or cheques.

2. Look for contact information. If the company is not willing to provide a name, street address and telephone number, that is already a warning sign!

3. Ask questions! If you have any questions or concerns, voice them! If the company is serious about customer service, their quick responses will prove it! If not, poor customer service BEFORE a sale is a pretty good sign to stay away!

4. Keep Everything! Until you get the item and verify it is what you wanted – keep copies of all e-mails and any transactions, and bookmark the site:) this way you can refer back to it easily.

A little bit of planning can go a long way to saving you big money online!
