Wedding Cake Idea

weddingcake_robin.jpg

I snagged this money-saving idea off the Thrifty Fun Weddings For Less board – this bride saved money off the cost of her wedding cake by purchasing a simple design with just buttercream icing and a piped edge. Her friends then used leftover wedding flowers to decorate it as shown.  The end result is a very elegant, elaborate design without the price tag!

Candy Buffet Follow-Up

Recently, I posted an article full of ideas for a elegant affordable candy buffet. One of the idea’s I shared was to search thrift shops and sales for glass containers. This week I found an awesome deal at a local thrift shop for our candy buffet – I got all three of these containers for $1.50! They are glass, and the lids need some work. I am going to sand the lids a little and spray paint them white. It will probably end up costing about $5 for all three when they are done!

Black & White DIY Invitation

I found this idea over at A $10,000 Wedding and I LOVE it!! It is also VERY affordable!

This bride took this black and white paper, and used it to accent a funky yet classy printed invitation for a very simple, unique and beautiful invitation. The color scheme is also perfect for a Black and White or Tuxedo Theme wedding.

I would have taken it one step further, and attached the invitation to black card stock for a look something like this:

The supply list & approximate costs (for 100 invitations)

The 4.25 x 1.38″ Stickers: 250 for $20 from The Sticker Guy

100 4.25 x 5″ pieces of white cardstock with the invitation wording printed on them. You can get 4 from a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of cardstock so you will need 25 pieces: $20 – Check your local dollar stores or ebay, you may be able to get them for even less then this.

100 4.75 x 5.5″ pieces of black cardstock – cut 4 from 12 x 12 cardstock so you will need 25 peices – $25 – again, check local dollar stores and ebay for deals.

Ink for printing

Approximate Cost: $65 – 65 cents per invitation!!!

Some additional ideas:

- The stickers only come in set of 250 but for $20, you can’t go wrong! Use the extra stickers for sealing the envelopes, place cards, thank you cards, etc.

- When you cut the black card stock, you should be left with a 2.5″ strip of black cardstock – perfect to cut into 2.5 x 3″ pieces to use for your RSVP cards! Print the RSVP information onto white paper and then mount it on the black pieces.

- If you want a slightly more formal look – cut the black cardstock into 9.5 x 5.5″ pieces and then fold for a card. Attach the white cardstock and sticker inside. You could cut out a piece of the front flap for the sticker to show through, add a ribbon to the flaps to tie them closed, stamp your names in white or silver ink on the front, or add white flower embellishments to the front to dress it up some more – but remember, those things cost money so calculate that in before you start.

Personal Table Names

A reader recently posted a comment on one of our posts called Using Table Markers to Enhance Your Theme. Their comment was so good, I thought it deserved it’s own post:

I am taking the table naming to a more personal level. I have picked out important events my husband-to-be and I share throughtout our relationship.

For example, the first time we ever spoke to one another was at a coffee stand. So, one of the tables will be named “Cafe o’ Le” followed by a very brief description on why it is named that.

I just feel personal is the way to go at weddings. Think about it, everyone is there to share this wonderful step in a couples life!

Enjoy!

Now THAT is a great idea!!

Snowflake Wedding DIY Projects

If you are planning a Snowflake Themed Wedding, here are a few craft projects from Micheals that you may be interested in:)

This snowflake wreath could be used as a centerpiece, place a rented hurricane glass in the middle with a candle burning in the middle. You could also use some white gosgrain ribbon and hang the on the church doors, above the alter or any place that needs a little something.

This  is a very simple yet lovely idea for a wedding favor. You can purchase the bags, and add the snowflake accents and ribbon. Fill with mints, white chocolates, white candies….

This snowflake  needlework design is actually fairly simple to complete and would be a great way to customize a table cloth, napkins, tabel runners, etc. If could also be done on white in a pale blue or silver color.

Another way to accent a table cloth, runner or napkin is to use stencils, fabric dye and spray on fabric paint. This table runner was dyed blue and then stenciled with white spray paint. You could do silver on white, white on silver, blue on silver, or blue on white as well.

Here is another unique idea that could be used for Save The Date cards, thank you cards or wedding favors. It is a card, with a detachable ornament keepsake. You could use these as wedding favors and include a thank you note inside so your thank you notes are taken care of:)

Baking A Cake

cakes.jpg

I promised a while back that I would share what I learned while making these wedding cakes for my sister’s wedding last month so here goes:) I will start by sharing info on actually baking the cakes:)

First, I have to confess something – I used box cakes, lol. They are affordable and taste good but tend to be to light for a wedding cake. To resolve this problem,  I added a 1/2 cup of flour to each mix. This makes the cakes a little heavier and they hold their moisture much better as well.

To actually cook the cakes, I used three different size cake pans: 14″, 10″ and 8″. The 14″ takes 3 boxes (or 3 regular size cake recipes), the 10″ takes 2, the 8″ takes 1.

Preparing the cake pans:

These cakes take a while to cook, so you want them to come out nicely. I sprayed each pan with PAM Cooking Spray, and then coated with flour. I also traced the shape of the pan on parchement paper, cut it out and placed the cut out parchment paper on the bottom of the pan before pouring in the batter.

Another concern with a wedding cake is avoiding that ugly bump in the middle of a cake. To fix this, you can purchase Cake Bake Strip which are special strips that you soak in water and then wrap around the outside of the pan. This helps distribute the heat evenly so you get a flat, even cake.

For large cakes, like the 14″, you also need something in the middle. I used a tin can, cleaned and delabled. I placed it in the middle with a bit of batter in it then poured the rest of the batter around it. Once cooked, this bit of batter filled the whole in the middle. Make sure you spray and flour inside and outside of your can.

Cooking Times:

At 325 – the 14″ took almost 2 hours, the 10″ took just over an hour and the 8″ took just over 30 minutes. Once the cakes were done, let them sit and cool about 10 minutes, then flip cake onto cooling racks.

Filling:

You can buy special cutting tools for this – I jus tused a long knife. I am not terribly brave – so I cut only once. I cut each layer in half, lined the centers with raspberry jam, and then placed the halves back together. If you have the time and want to, you can cut the cake into three layers and feel in between each. You could even use different fillings in each center: chocolate icing in one, raspberry filling in the other, etc.

Coming Later: Decorating:)
