Make Your Wedding Reception Sparkle! Decorating Tips On A Budget

(originally posted on Plan Best Weddings)

Choosing the right decorations for a wedding reception can be a real challenge. This can be further complicated if you are trying to decorate on a tight budget. However there are tons of sources of cheap wedding decorations that can add a lot of zest and sparkle to the reception. If you plan ahead, work carefully and buy strategically you can save a ton of money while still having a beautifully decorated reception. This article will help with some practical ideas and tips for decorating your wedding reception on a budget.

Do It Yourself

One of the best ways to save money on wedding reception decorations is to do some of the work yourself. You can often buy the pieces and parts separate and then simple assemble the decorations. The great thing is you will save money, while personalizing your decorations. This will ensure that you wedding decorations look different from a standard cheap store bought ones. For example you might buy some streamers and balloons and then assemble these together in an interesting arrangement.

Buy In Bulk

Another great way which really goes along with the Do It Yourself concept is to buy in bulk whenever possible. This is easiest to do online these days as you can find many stores that will sell in large quantities. For example you can get 250 tea light or floating candles and sine you are purchasing so many at one time you will save big. Then you can use the concept from above and assemble them on your own.

Use Friends

An easy way to get the decorations done fast is to have a pre wedding decoration party with your girlfriends. Have them come over for an evening of hot soup and sandwiches and then spend the rest of the evening enjoying everyone’s company and conversation while everybody works away at assembling the decorations for the reception.

Use Candles

Buy a ton of candles in bulk and then pick up a few large glass bowls or large open vases and you have your decorations set. You can float the candles on water inside of the vases. This makes a wonderful sparkling environment for the reception that people will just love. It is simple yet very elegant and can be done with very little work. For an extra personal touch you can include some candles at each persons sitting place also.

So get started early, purchase in bulk then divide and conquer to get the assembly of your decorations done for very little expense.

COTW: Black & White

It’s time to revive the Color Of The Week. Some of the first decisions most brides make is the date, location and color. We generally expect a color theme at all weddings. It wasn’t always that way. Traditional, formal weddings did not allow for color – they were black and white.

While many brides today prefer to have color, black and white is still a very elegant, formal color scheme and brides are once again returning to this classic, sophisticated look. So, this week we will feature Black & White as our color scheme.

Starfish ideas for a Beach Wedding

sbfish.gif

Starfish make a great theme or accent peice for any beach themed wedding. Here are some neat ideas for incorporating starfish into your decor.

1. Small starfish can be used to decorate each wedding invitation, program, placemarker or table marker.

2. Place Starfish on your wedding cake, in your centerpeice, in your flowers, or in garlands used for decor.

3. A large starfish can also make a great wedding favor. Tie each one with a ribbon and a personalized tag.

4. Create a beach wedding canopy by hanging Starfish, shells, and other sea “life” from the ceiling on fish wire, raffia or ribbon. This is a great way to bring a little beach into an indoor or tent reception as well!

Sand Dollar Wedding Theme

shell.gifWe are well into August, and you would think that beach weddings are coming to an end – but beach weddings: at destination locations: are actually quite popular during wedding months as well. And, if you are planning a beach wedding for next summer, end of season sales are a great way to save some money on your next decorating needs.

So, if beach weddings interest you, you will love these sand dollars. Sand dollars are beautiful and make a great beach wedding theme. Large sand dollars (3-4″) can be used as keepsake wedding favors: just tie each one with a raffia bow and a personalized tag.

Medium sizes make great decor peices. You can use a magic marker or gell pen to write on them and use them as place markers or table markers. They can be used in your centerpieces, or as accent pieces on the cake or guestbook tables.

Smaller sand dollars (1/2 – 1″) can be used to accent invitations, programs, place cards, table names, the guestbook, or even placed on small picks and inserted in among your flowers!

Mosaic Marbles

mosaictilearts_1909_2886732.jpgI posted a few polka dot wedding centerpiece ideas last week that required black and white glass pebbles but was having trouble finding a reliable online source for them. Today, I found them on the Mosaic Tile Arts website. They are about $2-$3 per pack of 50.

Some things they can be used for:

- filling vases

- covering sand in buckets

- sprinkled around the centerpiece for added color

- accenting favors, placecards, table signs, out of town guest bags, centerpeices, candle holders, wedding cakes, etc.

They also carry mosaic tiles, mirror tiles, tumbled glass (like sea glass) and more which could be used for DIY decor projects as well:)

Fun Funky 50’s Wedding Centerpiece

newyear_stage_center.jpg

This was actually a New Years Party but I thought it would be a cute centerpiece idea for someone planning Funky 50′s wedding. The centerpiece is a 50′s style shake cup filled with pink and white sand. The top is filled is filled with pink and white carnations – finished with a dark pink carnation for the cherry, and two straws. I am not a fan of the black furry stand. I would place the glass on a mirror, and sprinkly white and pink flower petals for a more romantic yet still funky elegance.

Polka Dot Wedding Centerpieces Idea 3

pink.jpg

I found this display on Target. A black and white polka dot ribbon tied around the case is all it would take to turn this vase into a perfect centerpiece. You could also place small votive holders with black and white votives around it for a romantic candle lite dinner.

These are lovely, and are $29.99 each. You can find them on the target website.

If they are a little expensive for your tastes, you may be able to get the look for less. Glass vases can be rented from your wedding rental provider for a few dollars. Silk pink florals can be purchased at the craft store along with some polka dot ribbon. If you are not a fan of ribbons – black and white stones in the vase would also make a beautiful touch.

Polka Dot Wedding Centerpieces Ideas 2A and 2B

Version 1:

tin-bucket.jpg

This Tin Bucket project we shared earlier would also work as a polka dot wedding centerpiece.

For The Bucket:

- Use polka dot paper for the stripes on the top and bottom of the bucket.

- Use a pink ribbon instead of a checked ribbon.

- The tag would be made using a black background, polka dot top and pink bottom.

- Use pink for the flowers to finish the can.

(Complete instructions)

Options To Fill The Bucket:

- Fill with sand to hold white pillar candles. Place a thin layer of white and black stones to hide the sand.

- Fill with white flowers. Glue Black stones or beads onto picks to inset into the flowers for a “polka dot” look.

Version 2:

You could rent silver vases similar to this one. Fill each vase with white roses. Use the black stones or beads on picks, mentioned above – to add “polka dots”. Finish each arrangement with a pink ribbon around the vase or pink rose petals sprinkled around the bottom of the vase.

Polka Dot Wedding Centerpieces

Yesterday, I got a message from a bride asking for centerpiece ideas for a black and white polka dot wedding with pink accents. So, over the next few days I will put together some ideas and share them on here as I come across them.

Here is my first idea:

98410788_80995c7c24_m.jpg

1. Rent glass containers from your rental provider.

2. Line the bottom of each container with black and white round glass decor pebbles. Another option is the decorative gravel you can buy for fish tanks. Or, check ebay or a local craft store for large black and white beads.

3. Place a pink flower into the pebbles and fill with water.

4. For the candles, you could do white, one white and one black – or if you wish: take some time and use some black wax from the craft store to drip “polka dots” right onto the candles.

5. Sprinkle roses petals around each table. You could do white, black(check out ebay for black petals), pink or some combination (white & black, white & pink, all three, etc)

I think that white petals with white candles, black & white pebbles and a pink flower would be a very elegant choice:) If you can’t find black and white pebbles – then use clear peddles, with polka dot candles, and white and black rose petals.
