Our color of the week for June 16 – 22 is ORANGE. I have never been a huge fan of orange as a wedding color until I say photos of a wedding done in orange and green. It was STUNNING!! So, this week we will honor the color orange – check back all week for orange dresses, cakes, decor, flowers, favors and more.

There are many colors that orange can be combined with, here are just a few suggestions.

Type Writer Guest Book

507097 typewriter Type Writer Guest Book

This idea was originally showcased on Martha Stewart Weddings and is catching on quickly. Any couple who loves reading, writing, antiques, literature, etc – can celebrate their personalities with this unique and memorable idea! You can find an antique typewriter fairly affordably online (try Ebay), at an anitque shop, an thrift shop or garage and estate sales.

You can use one long roll of paper, which can then be rolled and tied like a scroll, of folded and placed right into your wedding album!  Or, use single sheets of paper, which can then be combined into a book, put together in a scrapbook or in your wedding ablum, or  assembled like a manuscript.

Beach Theme Wedding Cakes

beachweddingcake Beach Theme Wedding Cakes

My search for beach and destination wedding cake ideas turned up a lot more selection then I had anticipated. I sorted though and picked out a few to share here. The vast majority are decorated with shells, starfish and other “sea life” in tasteful white, cream, blue and sandy colors. Here, I have picked some of my favorites, and included a few that made me go “what the….” – I’m sure you can figure out which ones those are, lol.

My very favorite – shown in the third row – had fish and other sea life actually iced on the layers, which sounds tacky but when you look a the close up, it is beautiful! My guess is that this would be the most expensive shown here, but it is goregous! So, with no furthur ado – my beach or destination wedding cake gallery:)

DIY Beach Theme Wedding Cake

seashellcake DIY Beach Theme Wedding Cake

Summer is here, and beach themed weddings are in full swing. If you are planning a Beach or Destination Wedding, a elegant themed wedding cake you can do your self is not just a dream!

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before your wedding, you need to learn how to work with fondant. You can buy fondant premade or as a powder mix at most cake decor suppliers and large craft stores. You can also find recipes you can try on Baking 911. To learn a little more about using fondant, read Martha’s Article on Fondant. Once you have decided on the fondant you will be using – either store bought or homemade – then you need to practice using it.

TO MAKE THE CAKE

You will need round cakes in three different sizes. For best results, decorate each layer seperately. Cover each layer in cream colored fondant.

TO DECORATE THE CAKE

CAKE #1:

After icing the layers, use additional fondant to create long “snakes” and twist into ropes to trim the bottom of each layer. Using various shells and a variety of sea decor items from the craft store, create a cake topper. Using hot glue, create matching clusters, attaching each to a pick, to be placed into the cake between layers – two per layer.

CAKE #2:

Start by stacking all three layers. Trim the edges of each layer with a string of faux pearls. Use faux star fish and shells from the craft store placed randomly in clusters around each layer. Top the cake with a small cluster of flowers: you can use a small peice of floral foam to hold the silk flowers in place. Spread extra shells and starfish around the table to a tasteful finish.

Calla Lily Wedding DIY Projects

While doing some research for this post – I learned a very interesting fact! Apparently, a calla lily is not actually a lily – in fact it is not a flower at all but rather a modified leaf! Regardless, this regal "flower" is associated with some of the most elegant weddings becuase of it's stunning, graceful and exotic appearance. They are also generally very pricing, and many brides to day are opting for high qulaity silk versions to cut down on costs.

One of the best things about silk flowers is that you can prepare them ahead of time and they won't wilt! For the nervous DIY bride, this means you can arrange and rearrange weeks in advance until you have it just perfect! Need ideas? Here are some great  DIY Projects for a Calla Lily Themed Wedding

These two bouquets each features stunning silk Calla Lilies with assorted greens and satin ribbons. Matching bridesmaid's bouquets could be made by simply using a little less flowers for a smaller version. Depending on the cost of silks at your local craft store, these bouquets could be made for as little as $30-$40 each: as compared to anywere from $75 – $300 from a florist!

Dress you men to match, with a simple elegant calla lily boutineirre.  For the ring bearer, make a smaller version with only one calla lily for a complete look! You could also have the flower girl carry a tiny bouquet of one calla lily and greens.

For some DIY reception accents, a calla lily place card frame is a prefect table accent – place one in the center of each plate for a perfect finishing touch! This reuseable fram could also double as a wedding favor! Or, you can place little chocolates (white of course) or mints in a favor box and decorate with ribbon and calla liles for an elegant finish! For a centerpiece, a tall clear vase holds a single silk calla lily anchored in clear craft stones with water just for show. Add a romantic candlelight glow by surrounding each centerpiece with three glass votive holders decorated with a tiny bow and calla lily.

Celebrity Wedding Cakes you can make!

cake denise sm Celebrity Wedding Cakes you can make!

Who’s Had It? Denise Richards & Charlie Sheen

Description: The cream-colored cake, concocted by Fantasy Frostings, featured a 16-in. base of chocolate fudge, a 12-in. midriff banana nut and an 8-in. top tier of white satin.

Make It Yourself: This is actually a very simple design to replicate! If you are not comfortable with cooking your own wedding cake, then save some money buy ordering a simple tiered cake with plain cream icing. If you want to make the cake yourself, start with three round cakes in staggered sizes. Stack as shown and decorate with cream icing. Using an icing pipe to pipe a icing trim along the upper rim of each layer.

You can then decorate the cake yourself using real or silk rose petals. Use a small piece of floral craft foam with silk roses for a crowning touch, then layer silk petals over the edges of the cake. Place on a petal-covered table for an elegant touch!!

cake braxton sm Celebrity Wedding Cakes you can make!

Who Had It? Toni Braxton & Keri Lewis

Description: A four-tier creation which looked like a perfect stack of four robin’s-egg-blue Tiffany boxes to compliment Toni’s Tiffany Blue theme.

Make It Yourself: Some time before hand, you will want to familiarize yourself with Fondant icing, and practice using it. You can by fondant premade or as a powder mix at most cake decor suppliers and large craft stores. You can also find recipes you can try on Baking 911. To learn a little more about using fondant, read Martha’s Article on Fondant. Once you have decided have the fondant you will be using – either store bought or homemade – then you need to practice using it. You will need to experiment with the color to find the right shade for a trademark Tiffany blue, and you will also want to practice making bows.

When it is time to make the cake, you will need to start with 4 varing sizes of square cake pans. Decorate each cake seperately. First, cover the cake with a light blue fondant, tucking the edges under for seamless look. Then, using a toothpick , you can press on the fondant to create the lines – giving you the look of a box with a lid. Finish each layer with a white “ribbon” strip – taking care to make sure that they do not all line up in the same spots. Make the bows as well. When it is time to set up the cake, place the layers in a stack, and place the ribbons on top of each layer, to finish the look.

cake elektra sm Celebrity Wedding Cakes you can make!

Who Had It? Carmen Electra & Dave Navarro

Description: A four-tiered cake containing layers of Oreo cheesecake, chocolate cake and strawberry shortcake was bedecked with Swarovski crystals and roses.

Make It Yourself: Again, if you are not comfortable making the cake yourself, you can start with a simple, white cake from the bakery and save money by decorating it yourself. To make it yourself, you need to start with three different sizes of round cakes, each on it’s own base. You will also want to take some time to learn to use fondant (see Toni’s Cake) Decorate with white fondant. For a clean, simple design – leave as is. If you want to go a little fancier, pipe royal icing in swiggles all around the cake, commonly called a Connelli Lace design. (see here for an example). Finish each tier by piping icing along the edge.

When it is time to assembly, stack each layer using pillars from your craft or cake decor store. For the cake top, use a small piece of floral faom, some crystal’s, silver craft wire and silk roses. Gently slide silk roses inbetween each layer so the space is full but not overcrowded. To finish, insert crystal’s attached to silver craft wire in among the roses.
