Groom’s Tireless Search For ‘Something Old’ Gives His Bride New Joy
Posted by Kari in Real Weddings on April 4th, 2009
(ARA) – Lt. Greg Martin wanted to give his fiancee the storybook wedding of her dreams. But he had a slight problem. She was in California planning their big day while he was on the other side of the world, stationed in Iraq. Being so far away made it even more difficult for him to hear the disappointment in her voice when she told him she couldn’t find something she had her heart set on for their big day.
“Years ago, my fiancee Shannon saw this cake topper she really liked in a department store that she thought would be perfect for her wedding day,” says Martin. “It’s called ‘Swept Away’, and after I proposed Shannon remembered it and said the name was so fitting because I swept her away.”
Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the topper, Lenox China, had discontinued it. Martin’s fiancee and her mother searched numerous stores and even got into bidding wars online, but couldn’t find the treasured piece. Martin started his own Internet search which led him to Replacements, Ltd., touted as the world’s largest supplier of old and new china, silver, crystal and collectibles. Unfortunately, Replacements had sold out of the cake topper as well. Little did a disappointed Martin know, his search had far from ended.
“My entire team was so touched by Greg’s story, how he was away serving our country and wanted so much to surprise his fiancee that we made it our mission to find that cake topper,” says Martha Newman, Internet services manager for Replacements, Ltd.
Replacements has long helped those like Martin looking for patterns that are no longer in production. In fact, the company’s bridal registry offers hope to those brides looking to complete heirloom patterns lovingly passed down as wedding gifts from generation to generation.
“Even though we sell active patterns, nearly 79 percent of our bridal registry sales are generated from discontinued and heirloom patterns,” says Donna Braswell-Bray, overseer of Replacements’ bridal program. “We’re one of the few places brides can turn to in finding patterns that are no longer being made, whether the manufacturer discontinued them last year or over a hundred years ago. In fact most manufacturers and department stores even refer customers to us for patterns they no longer carry.”
What’s more, if a bride doesn’t know the pattern name or who made it, Replacements research department will help track down that information through the company’s free pattern identification service. Replacements receives up to 3,000 requests weekly from people looking to identify patterns they’ve inherited or whose name they simply can’t remember.
As for Martin’s dilemma, Replacements’ buying services team launched a nationwide search and finally found the highly sought after cake topper.
“Many of us were in tears, we were clapping and just so overwhelmed,” says Newman. “We were so excited to let him know we were able to make this wish come true.”
Replacements shipped the cake topper directly to Martin’s fiancee, and he called her so they could open it together over the phone. “I wish I could have been there to see her reaction and her big smile,” says Martin. “Needless to say Shannon was stunned and very excited to get the cake topper she wanted so much. I can’t believe they were able to help me find exactly what she wanted to make our wedding day perfect!”

Posted by Kari in The Real Deal on April 4th, 2009
I got a little lost in eBay today – that happens to me A LOT! I wish I could afford to buy dress after dress because I always find some great deals! Here are a few of my favorite finds today – maybe some lucky bride will find her dream dress among them!

Dress #1: There aren’t a ton of pictures of this dress, but from what I can see it looks lovely. It’s white with some gorgeous beading and lace details – and it’s currently priced at $0.01 with a $150 buy it now option on eBay. I have a feeling some lucky bride is going to get this dress for a steal.
Dress #2: This gorgeous dress is a Maggie Sottero design in size 12 on eBay. The gown is used and needs some cleaning but it’s selling with a buy it now price of $49.99! Even after paying the cleaning bill and alternations, it’s going to be a huge steal. I LOVE the detailing on the bodice and skirt.

Dress #3: If you’re looking for classic vintage – this is your dress. This gown is fantastic! It would be perfect for a glamourous vintage wedding. It’s a size 2 and needs some cleaning but it is currently listed at $0.99 on eBay! I am very tempted to bid on this one – I could find a use for it some day lol.

Before Your ‘I Do’s,’ Do Financial Review First
Posted by Kari in Getting Started on March 27th, 2009
(ARA) – One thing you can definitely say about the current credit crunch – it definately isn’t romantic. For couples about to exchange “I do’s,” a clear understanding of each other’s credit history as singles, and how they will use credit as a couple, is vital to ensure their future wedded bliss.
All signs point to the reality that credit is very likely to be difficult to get for a while, even for those with good credit scores. Getting married is a life-changing event that will most likely impact your credit rating. That is why it is important for couples to be open and honest with each other about their credit histories, credit-use habits and plans for using future credit.
Credit has become an integral part of the American institution of marriage. If you are newlyweds, you’ll likely require credit to pay for some of your basic needs and dreams – from buying your first house to financing the minivan you’ll need to transport the family you plan to have. Your blended credit rating will decide how easy or difficult it is to secure those loans at favorable rates.
So how can you prevent the credit crunch from putting the squeeze on your plans for building a life together? Here are some basic tips:
First, share credit reports. As a single person, your credit score was a private matter between you and the people you borrowed money from. When you’re married, your credit history becomes linked to your spouse’s and he or she deserves to know ahead of time how you rate with lenders. Knowing what’s on your credit report is the first vital step toward reaching your personal financial goals as a couple. Get a copy of your credit report at www.FreeCreditReport.com and present it to your intended.
Next, set mutual priorities and goals. If you both have significant debt, perhaps your goal will be to pay that off before incurring any new debt. Pool your earnings to pay off the highest interest debts first – his $9,000 credit card debt may actually cost you more in interest each month than her $14,000 auto loan.
If you both are relatively debt-free then thats awesome. You can turn your attention to setting savings and spending priorities, including saving for a down payment on a house (the low-rate, zero-down loan is virtually extinct), putting money aside for your retirement or building up your cushion of savings in case the economy gets worse and one of you loses a job. Decide which priority is highest on your list, agree on a time frame for reaching that goal and organize a game plan for getting there.
It’s important to have these discussions before the wedding. You’ll both enjoy your big day more knowing you’re on the same page regarding your financial future.
It is easy to check your credit reports. Web sites like www.FreeCreditReport.com allow you to get your credit report and credit score which gives you more control over your personal finances.

2009’s Boldest, Most Beautiful Wedding Gown Trends
Posted by Kari in Bridal Gowns & Accessories on March 25th, 2009
Finally! 2009’s gowns bring brides some real choices, after several years of strapless uniformity. (Thank you, Vera Wang!) If you’re the type of bride who wants a couture (or couture-inspired) gown to match the finer shades of your personality and wedding style, 2009 is the year with your name on it! Here are a few of the hottest trends going:
Crumb-Catcher Bodices.
This regal, old-world design twist came from that same lust for luxe that brought us Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, and its subsequent style explosion in the bridal world.
BUDGET FRIENDLY OPTIONS:

Mori Lee Style 2161: $670 from House Of Brides ($1009.95 retail), Wtoo Style 11011 Penelope: $435 from House Of Brides ($724.95 retail)
Greek Goddess Columns.
The ultimate look backward, the style takes us back to the lovely goddesses (and early supermodels) of Greece’s Golden Age. With plenty of glorious examples to be seen from bridal magazines to the red carpet, this style’s not going away soon. Happily, it lends itself to arm bling and the half up-half down style that’s still so alluring to brides. Also note: bridesmaids look amazing in goddess gowns when the bride’s wearing something more structured.
BUDGET FRIENDLY OPTIONS:

Impressions Style 4940: $315 from House Of Brides ($474.95 retail), Wtoo Style 11719 Catherine: $490 from House of Brides ($679.95 retail)
Asymmetrical / One-Shouldered Styles.
These gowns are sexy attention-getters. Another hot commodity on the red carpet, the asymmetrical top adds up to an exciting departure from same-old strapless, while exuding plenty of come-hither vibes.
Subued Color Plays.
Color’s no longer the domain of a bold — or even distracting — burst of contrast in the train or cuffed bodice of an otherwise stark-white gown. Instead, next year’s color inspiration flows from Vera Wang’s gowns in warm toasts and charcoals, St. Pucchi’s fabulous champagne and platinum combos, or gowns that ripple with multicolored gardens of embroidery (Claire Pettibone).
The Mini.
No longer the oddball in an otherwise full-length portfolio, minis have become serious business, with layers and ruches and ruffles aplenty. Increasing number of brides find them a brilliant choice for tent weddings on the shore or in the vineyard. And let’s not forget those brides who want a gorgeous but mobile second gown to get down and boogie the night away.
BUDGET FRIENDLY OPTIONS:

Alyce Style 6073: $238 from PromGirl, Jovani Style 155118: $400 from PromGirl

Budget Dress Of The Week
Posted by Kari in Bridal Gowns & Accessories on March 23rd, 2009

This week’s budget dress is probably one of my favorites. This Lady Roi Bridals creation is absolutly amazing with its black contrast detailing. It is made in matte satin and features an empire seam embellished with black piping and black floral appliqué delicately scattered on bodice and inner hem. Ihis gown also has wonderful beading over the bodice and skirt. This dress leaves onlookers stunned with its beautiful lace-up back. Style 8339 normally retails for $599.95 but is a steal on House of Brides for $428.00

Posted by Kari in Uncategorized on March 20th, 2009
Normally Kari gets to do the Real Deal posts but I found this dress on eBay today and wanted to share. This is a used dress being sold by a recent bride. It caught my attention because of the lovely beadwork on the skirt and bodice. The dress needs a zipper repaired and it needs to be cleaned but at $49 you can afford to give it a little TLC! In size 12, this dress would be perfect for a bride looking for a dress on a limited budget! Even with cleaning and the zipper repairs, you could be wearing this wedding dress for under $200!

Find the Perfect Pearls For Your Wedding Ensemble
(ARA) – Pearls are the perfect wedding companion. Known by some as the “Queen of Gems,” the classic elegance of pearls transcends centuries and style fads. Nothing looks more beautiful with a bridal gown than a single strand of flawless pearls.
But pearls are not just for the bride — they’re the perfect accessory for bridesmaids as well. Today, you can find pearls in shades ranging from the traditional white all the way through the color rainbow, including pink, green and black, so they will coordinate with the wedding party’s dresses.
If you’re confused by the different types of pearls on the market, you’re not alone. “Pearls are classified according to their origin and their shape,” says Natalie Parman, vice president of merchandising at Jewelry TV. “Because of the wide variety of pearls available, you can choose a look and a price that is right for you.”
Pearls are formed when a foreign object enters the shell of a mollusk and triggers the release of nacre, which builds layer upon layer until a pearl is formed. Most pearls in retail stores today are cultured pearls. They are less expensive than natural pearls because they are mass-produced with the aid of technology. Instead of waiting for nature to take its course, pearl farmers insert an irritant and a nucleus (often a mother of pearl bead) into an oyster to speed up the process. Cultured pearls come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and many are dyed. As a result you can find almost any color your interested in.
Akoya cultured pearls are produced by the Akoya oyster found in the waters surrounding Japan. They are almost perfectly round and are well known for their high luster and rich color, which can range from white to cream, pink, green, silver and gold. These pearls can vary in size from between 2 millimeters to 10 millimeters. “Cultured Akoya pearls are the quintessential ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ strand in a creamy white color,” says Parman. “Multiple strands or choker styles are hot wedding trends.” Since they are affordable, cultured Akoya pearls also make wonderful bridesmaids and mothers’ gifts.
South Sea cultured pearls are larger than Akoyas, usually more than 10 millimeters. Produced in the warm waters of the South Seas, they come mainly from Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. These pearls are mainly white, yellow or gold. Due to their size and rarity, South Sea pearls are expensive. Exotic golden South Sea pearls in particular have gained popularity in the United States in recent years. “If you’re choosing a special strand of pearls for your wedding, this can be a good jewelry investment,” says Parman.
Tahitian pearls are produced in Tahiti, the Cook Islands and Mexico. They range in color from black, to aubergine, pistachio and many other colors, often with overtones of blue, pink or green. These pearls range between 8 and 15 millimeters and are highly valued because of their rarity. “Wear Tahitian pearls to your rehearsal dinner, or pack them as part of your honeymoon wardrobe,” says Parman.
When choosing pearls, look for nacre thickness and quality. Nacre quality determines how long the pearl will last as well as how light reflects through the pearls. Check for any cracks or peeling in the nacre. Also, look for how the pearls on a strand are matched. Pearl matching affects the value of the piece, as mismatched pearls are not as aesthetically pleasing. Finally, look for pearls that are individually knotted between each pearl instead of just strung one after the other — that’s a sign of quality.
Whatever your jewelry wish for your wedding day, visit www.jtv.com for a great selection of pearl necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
